Do you know the adularia or moonstone?
The name adularia comes from Mount Adula located in Switzerland, where the first deposits in alpine rocks were discovered. Adularia is colorless or light green and belongs to the feldspar group: It also has a hardness of 6-6.5, therefore medium. If worn on jewels you must therefore be careful not to hit it violently or drop it.
The main feature of adularia is a slight opalescence with bluish white and silvery white reflections similar to moonlight.
When this phenomenon, known as “adularescence” is very evident, we have the variety called moonstone.
The main deposits of moonstone, of better quality, are those of Sri Lanka. Other finds are found in Burma, India and Madagascar.
Since ancient times, due to its particular color, adularia has been considered a gem with magical effects. The ancients believed that it was composed of small elements of the moon itself and that its internal light was the light of a positive deity. And the ancient Indians also represented their deity Ganesh, the four-armed goddess, with a moonstone on her forehead. Lately it has become a very fashion stone, used on many fashion jewels, both mounted on red gold and on white gold, to create glamorous and contemporary looks.
Moonstone has always been associated with the female world and the dream world, dreams and the unconscious. It is the ideal gem for those who want to explore the spiritual dimensions without sacrificing rationality. It is also the lucky stone of the month of June.
