After talking to you about turquoise, we couldn’t help but tell you something about coral, the CULT stone of summer.
Coral and its history
Coral is an ancient material, known since prehistoric times. This is demonstrated by the findings of coral jewelry in the Neolithic tombs. Even the Greeks and Romans considered it “the best fruit of the sea”.
Currently in Italy the most important location for coral processing is Torre del Greco, considered the main commercial coral center in the world.
But what is coral?
Coral has the shape of a more or less branched bush and is made up of the calcareous skeleton of marine animal organisms. Coral is found in colonies, known as coral reefs, arranged at depths ranging from about ten to a few hundred meters.
What colors does coral exist in?
The depth of the waters in which they are found has a considerable influence on the color of the corals. In fact, in the seabed covered by little water, the color takes on bright red tones. At high depths, on the other hand, they are generally more faded or in any case poorly colored.
The most precious coral is the one that has a more uniform color and whose surface is homogeneous, without cracks or marks of any kind.
The color of the coral is distinguished according to the shades:
- white, which gives a pure white color
- peau d’ange, which has a delicate and uniform pink color
- pale pink
- bright pink
- second color, when it takes a salmon color
- red
- dark red
- arciscuro or carbonetto when it takes an ox blood color
Coral jewels by Virano Gioielli
Once the most used variety of coral in jewelry was the red and bright red coral typical of the Mediterranean. By now, however, it has become extinct, and therefore what is left has a very high price.
The most commercialized variety now is therefore the peau d’ange coral, or the pale pink one, which combined with white gold and diamonds, allows you to create truly elegant, current and fashion jewels. Given the delicacy of the color, the jewels with pink corals are perfect for your summer and winter outfits.
We at Virano Gioielli create with coral: earrings, bracelets, rings and necklaces or pendants. Very typical is the coral branch used as a charm.
