It often happens that you find a ring that over time no longer fits properly or that you were given without knowing it. To solve the problem, today we explain how to tighten or widen a ring, a process that we carry out daily in our artisan goldsmith’s workshop.
How do you size a ring?
Depending on the material and the stones that are set in it, each ring has different procedures in the measurement phase.
How do you widen or tighten a wedding ring?
One of the most common rings that often requires some size changes over time is the wedding ring. To widen/tighten this type of ring you can proceed in two ways:
- To increase the size of the wedding ring slightly, use the tightener tool. In this machine the wedding ring is inserted into a cone and, by means of a forcefully pulled lever, this expands, as gold is very ductile.
- To tight the ring by a few sizes, we use the same machine made up of rods of different sizes, in which the ring will be placed. A rod slightly smaller than the current size of the ring is chosen and through a lever, by exerting pressure, a piston descends which pushes the ring downwards which, upon meeting the smaller round invitation, will tend to tighten to fit the dimension.
- If, alternatively, the ring needs to be widened or narrowed by more measures, it is necessary to proceed by cutting the base and then proceed by adding / removing a piece (we are talking about millimeters) of gold / silver, until the desired size. We then continue with welding, to restore the round size and finally it is polished.
How to tighten or widen a solitaire ring?
Even for engagement ring, the measure is not always right by future husband’s, which is why they require a secondary intervention. For this type of rings you can proceed as described above, taking care not to let the stones come out of the tips.
In any case the tips will have to be hammered down to best fix the stone and finally we will move on to polishing.
Be careful: Not all stones are resistant to the heat of welding, such as diamonds; there are stones that must be removed before the measurement process and set again at the end of the process.
How to change the size of a eternity ring?
The matter becomes more complicated when we are dealing with a eternity ring made of stones.
- There are some models that can be widened or tightened by adding/removing a diamond setting or inserting a piece of gold inside to tighten it.
- But often due to the processing of these rings or because they are too thin they would tend to break and consequently we often recommend making a new one in the correct size.
