Amethyst is one of the best known and most appreciated varieties of quartz, famous for its intense purple colour. In this article we want to recommend some of our jewels with amethyst, the purple stone that never goes out of style.
History of the amethyst
The term amethyst comes from the Greek word “amethystos” which means to preserve oneself from drunkenness. The history of the amethyst dates back precisely to some beliefs of the ancient Greeks, who used it as a remedy against the effects of alcohol.
In Egypt and Mesopotamia this stone symbolized power and royalty. For this reason we find it in the famous seal worn by Cleopatra.
Also loved by Catholic clergy, who believed it promoted celibacy, amethyst is also known as the “papal stone”. Even today, in fact, she is set in the rings of bishops.
Where is amethyst found?
The main deposits of amethyst are found in some states of South America and in Europe. The most important and well-known one is the one in the valley of the Nahe river, in Germany. Small deposits have also been found in Italy in the provinces of Trento, Turin, Sassari and Grosseto.
