Men’s cufflinks: what is their origin
Cufflinks for men are one of the accessories that have come back in fashion in recent years.
For almost 800 years they have been a fundamental and ever-present element of the look of all men. This is because the cufflinks are able to add a touch of fantasy and originality to the anonymous male wardrobe. Kind of just like with ties.
The cufflinks first appeared in England and then in France in the post-Renaissance era. At the time they were called “Sleeve buttons” and were worn by the nobles and the upper middle class. The tailors liked them a lot, because they replaced the ribbons and laces with which the sleeves of the shirt were tied. Gradually they became a symbol of prestige and power and the artisans indulged in the use of the most various materials to make them. From gold and precious stones to enamels and hard stones.
The initials of the owner have always been engraved on the cufflinks, or the coat of arms of the family they belong to, or the initials of the wife and husband. They were handed down, like all jewels, from generation to generation.
But it is not true that cufflinks should only be worn on elegant occasions. They are definitely a must for the groom
the wedding day. But they give a touch of refined elegance even on more casual looks using shirts with double buttonhole. But let’s see in detail how they should be worn and on what types of shirts.
Men’s cufflinks: how to wear them
Generally, men’s cufflinks are perfect on shirts with a “French” cuff. This is a cuff longer than normal, double, folded back on itself, which instead of having the buttonhole on one side and the button on the other, has the buttonhole on both sides. When you put on the cufflinks, you have to pass them through all the holes and be careful to have the most beautiful and worked outward part of the cufflink. These shirts with French cuffs, can be considered too elegant on certain occasions or “uncomfortable” because the cuffs being double are heavy and rigid.
If you want to wear cufflinks every day, even in a more casual way, there are also “normal” shirts, with single cuffs, which however have a second buttonhole instead of a button. So you can wear the cufflinks every day without having a too formal look, but always appearing chic and refined in your outfit.
Models of men’s cufflinks in gold or silver are:
- cufflinks with American system: with the cufflink on one side only and a rigid folding bar on the other. Once it has entered the shirt buttonhole it folds up to prevent it from coming out. We can say that it is the most comfortable and fastest model to wear.
- chain cufflinks: the two parts are connected by a chain. They can have either a twin on both sides, or a twin on one side and a finger on the other.
- twins cufflinks: the usually identical twins are connected by a finger.
