Do you know the characteristics of the ruby?
Surely you have already heard ofemerald, sapphire and ruby. But do you know exactly the characteristics of the ruby and why it is a colored gemstone?
In this article we will provide you with some interesting information if you want to buy this precious gem.
First of all let’s see what it is.
The word ruby comes from the Latin “ruber” which means red.
Like sapphire, it is a colored precious stone that belongs to the corundum family, that is, it is composed of aluminum oxide crystals (Al2O3). Its intense red color is due to the presence of chromium.
Second only to diamond for its hardness, it is a very ancient gem, which has always been used to create talisman jewels that were thought to have magical powers:
- in India they believed that the ruby had a fire in it.
- in the Middle Ages it was thought to have divinatory powers and to darken in proximity to negative events
- In the nineteenth century it represented the nobles, but it was also considered a magical amulet capable of chasing away disease, nightmares or suffering.
If the ruby is of an intense and pure red, it is an extremely rare gem, even more than a diamond, and this makes it extremely precious. Once the most important deposit, from which the most precious rubies were extracted was in Burma, but now it is running out, and it is therefore difficult to find still high quality gems.
Meanwhile, other deposits have been discovered in other parts of the world and those from which the best gems are usually extracted are in Madagascar and Mozambique.
Today this gem is a symbol of:
- sun and fire
- protection from diseases and dangers
