Do you know the color of tourmaline?
Tourmaline is a very particular gem because it is present in nature in more than a hundred shades of different colors, sometimes even polychrome.
In fact, its name derives from the Sinhalese “turmali” which means stone of mixed colors. Over the years it has also been called “the chameleon stone”, precisely because of the many shades of color it can take and the confusion it has generated over the years. Its origin is in fact very ancient, it was already known and used in Europe in the third century BC. But precisely this variety of colors has meant that over the years it was often confused with other precious stones.
Tourmalines are a group of minerals belonging to the class of silicates, and their color depends on the different chemical composition.
Here are the main colors of tourmalines used in jewelry
- Indicolite: color between bright blue and blue.
- Rubellite: purplish red color. It is one of the most prized varieties.
- Verdelite: green in color with shades ranging from yellow-green to blue-green. It owes its color to the presence of iron and titanium.
- Dravite: brown in color. It is very rare to find a good quality for use in jewelry.
- Cromo-Tourmaline: intense green color. This is due to chromium and vanadium ions in its crystal lattice. Due to its color it is more valuable than verdelite.
- Paraiba: unique colour, neon turquoise like the Caribbean sea. It is the rarest and most valuable variety. The color comes from the presence of copper in its crystal lattice. The name instead derives from the first Brazilian mine in which it was found.
- Rose tourmaline: the color is similar to that of rubellite but less intense and tending more to pink
- Watermelon Tourmaline: it is part of the polychrome, and is very particular because the colors it assumes are exactly those of a slice of watermelon.
