Have you ever heard of natural zircon?
Often in the world of jewelry and precious stones there is a lot of confusion between the terms diamond and zircon.
In this article we will explain the differences and their values.
First of all let’s talk about zircon. Often people mistakenly refer to what is actually a cubic zirconia “zircon”. It is a mineral of zirconium but artificially created by man in the laboratory and not by nature and marketed since the 1960s. It is a large colorless crystal, which resembles a diamond but its value is therefore much less compared to that of diamonds, and to that of natural zircons. It can be considered the economical alternative to a diamond. But be careful because cubic zirconia with diamonds has nothing to do and you have to be careful when buying to understand what you are buying.
The real natural diamond, on the other hand, is a very hard carbon crystal that takes millions of years to form, with a production limited to the available deposits, and whose price and value are completely different from those of cubic zirconia.
But now it’s the moment of natural zircon.
Is natural zircon a precious stone?
Natural zircon can be considered a semi-precious stone.
It is made from zirconium silicate, a crystal that has many of the physical characteristics of diamond.
Here are the characteristics of natural zircon.
First of all it is a stone that can take on various shades of color:
- golden-brown
- green
- pink
- violet
- white
- yellow
- blue. Light blue or blue are the most beautiful, sought after and precious.
One of the most precious natural zircons is Ratanakiri, a semi-precious stone with an intense blue color from Cambodia.
Like diamond, natural zircon has the ability to refract. On the other hand, the main difference from diamond is that the reflection of light on it is much less brilliant, and is also much less hard.
