Guide to the various diamond cuts
Cutting a diamond is an operation that requires experience and is important for the stone as it enhances its brilliance.
What are the cuts of the diamond?
We introduce you to some of the best known and most used diamond cuts in jewelry.
- Brilliant cut
The best known of all and also the most precious is the brilliant cut diamond, with a round shape, characterized by 57 facets that allow light to filter inside.
The peculiarity of this cut is precisely its different facets, which give the stone brightness and brilliance. This cut is used in jewelery to create the so-called “points of light”: such as necklaces, earrings and solitaires. But it is also the most used for engagement rings or solitaire rings used in marriage proposals.
- Marquise or navette cut
The marquise cut has an oval shape with two points at the end, is made up of 55 facets and up to 0.35 carats is also called navette.
A cut of this type is used above all to create rings, placing the stone in the center.
- Heart cut
The heart cut is a modified version of the brilliant cut and has 56 to 59 facets. This type of cut is suitable for creating love jewellery.
It is used for making rings, chokers and earrings. Also this type of cut is perfect to be mounted on an engagement ring to be used for the marriage proposal. But it is also very suitable as a gift for the birth of a child or for a milestone anniversary.
- Baguette cut
The baguette cut is one of the oldest and takes its name from the typical French bread, which recalls its rectangular shape.
It is mainly used as side stones for rings, but also as center stones like our ring.
Other diamond cuts
- Princess cut
The princess cut dates back to the early seventies of the twentieth century, invented by a famous diamond cutter who initially called it the “Barion cut”.
This diamond cut is also usually used to create “solitaire” type rings; instead, we decided to place a small one to create this helix earring. Also widely used in girodito or eternity rings or for half rings but of important dimensions.
- Drop cut
The teardrop cut is very common in jewellery, used both for the creation of rings and pendants. One of the best known pear cut diamonds is the Cullinan I, cut from the largest rough diamond found in history.
